The directories fill that gap with a $995 starting price that describes a different pricing model entirely, and one pricing site multiplies it out to $1,194,000 a year for a hundred users. A firm trying to budget honestly ends up somewhere between $995 and six figures for the same product.

Two editions matter here. The priced one is ScanWriter Excel. The one accountants are usually sent to is the ScanWriter QuickBooks Edition, which turns statements, bills and receipts into more than 18 QuickBooks transaction types. Personable publishes no price for the QuickBooks Edition at all, so treat $6,045 as the floor of what you will be quoted, not a ceiling.
Search for ScanWriter pricing and you will get at least four answers, none of which match the vendor page. We checked each one ourselves rather than repeating a summary.

The $995 figure is the interesting one. Capterra and Software Advice both show it, and Capterra labels it per user, per month. PricingNow then takes that monthly reading at face value and multiplies it out, publishing $11,940 a year for one user and $1,194,000 a year for a hundred. That last number is not a ScanWriter price. It is arithmetic performed on a directory listing that does not match how Personable actually sells the product, which is a per workstation license with an annual maintenance fee attached.
The practical damage is real. A firm budgeting from Software Advice would pencil in $995 and be short by roughly $8,600 in year one. A firm budgeting from an older roundup would use $5,495 and $3,234 and be short by about $873. Ask for the current numbers in writing before you sign anything.
It depends entirely on whether you are doing investigations or bookkeeping, and those two jobs have very different budgets. ScanWriter is built for the first. It reads check images and deposit slips and pulls payee, payer, amount and date off them. It ships a reader library covering statements from more than 15,000 financial institutions, including foreign banks in several languages. Personable builds 10 customized readers for you as part of the Standard license, so an unusual statement format becomes their problem rather than yours. For a forensic accountant working a subpoenaed box of statements toward something that has to stand up in court, that is a defensible $9,602.
If your actual job is turning this month statements into a file your accounting software will accept, you are buying a great deal of casework machinery you will never open. That is the comparison worth running.

Read that table properly. ScanWriter wins four rows outright, and those four rows are exactly the ones an investigator cares about. We win on price, on not needing Windows, and on getting an OFX or CSV file that imports into accounting software without a further step. If you need check image extraction or court ready casework, buy ScanWriter. If you need bank statement extraction software for a recurring monthly close, $9,602 is a lot to pay for a format conversion.
ScanWriter is data entry automation software from Personable, a US company reachable on (800) 688-4281. You upload financial documents, it extracts the transactions using a library of bank specific readers, and it writes them out to Excel or straight into QuickBooks as entries. Personable quotes roughly 10 seconds per page. It is sold in two editions, ScanWriter Excel and the ScanWriter QuickBooks Edition, and there is a separate ScanWriter AI product line alongside them.
One limit is worth knowing before a demo: their own FAQ says ScanWriter can capture any computer-typed characters on PDFs. Typed statements are fine. Handwriting is not the target.
Not natively. ScanWriter is Windows software, and Personable FAQ gives Mac owners two routes: install Windows through Boot Camp on a recent iMac with an Intel processor, or run Windows in virtualization software such as VMware Fusion or Parallels. Check the date on that advice. Apple moved the Mac to its own silicon starting in 2020 and Boot Camp does not exist on those machines, so on any Mac bought in the last several years virtualization is the only one of the two options still available.

It is $3,557, it is described as non-prorated, and it is attached to each standard license. Non-prorated matters. If you buy in month eleven you should expect to be asked for the full year rather than two months of it, so confirm the renewal date before you sign.
That fee is also why the license price alone understates the cost. Any comparison that quotes $6,045 and stops has left out the larger recurring number.
BankScan, from Gee Whiz Software in San Diego, is the other long standing name in forensic statement conversion, and buyers routinely shortlist the two together. The important operational difference is that BankScan does no OCR of its own. Its brochure is explicit that you first run an off the shelf program such as OmniPage or Abbyy FineReader to produce text files, then feed those into BankScan with the right bank template selected. So BankScan is a second license to buy and a second step to run. BankScan publishes no price either, and its entire site sits behind a registration wall. MoneyThumb charges per conversion, where one conversion is a single statement month regardless of page count. ProperConvert sells a flat unlimited desktop license. A converter gives you an OFX or CSV file and QuickBooks decides what to do with it, which is what most bookkeeping teams want for bank feed work but is not the same as creating vendor bills.
Treat the ratings with the same care as the prices. The directories carrying ScanWriter reviews are working from a review count in the low double digits, and the same profiles show a starting price six times off the vendor own page. Ask Personable for references in your own field, whether that is law enforcement, family law or accounting, because the product is used very differently in each.
