How do you import a PDF bank statement into MoneyWiz?

MoneyWiz cannot import PDF files. It imports CSV, QIF, OFX, QFX and MT940. Convert the PDF statement to OFX, drag the file onto the MoneyWiz window, link the account in the Import Wizard and finish with Quick import. Import one statement month per file and check the closing balance against the PDF.

MoneyWiz reads statement files. Your bank hands you PDFs.

MoneyWiz imports CSV, QIF, OFX, QFX and MT940, and nothing else. Online Banking stops at 30 to 90 days, older downloads disappear, and a year of a busy account is hundreds of lines to type.

From PDF statement to a MoneyWiz-ready file

One upload gives you an OFX file with account details, signed amounts and transaction IDs, or a clean CSV.

How do I import transactions into MoneyWiz?

Drag an OFX, QFX, QIF, CSV or MT940 file onto the MoneyWiz window or its icon, and the Import Wizard walks you through linking accounts, payees and categories. You can also copy a file's contents and use Import from clipboard in MoneyWiz Settings. PDF is not on the list. When the months you need only exist as PDF statements, convert them to OFX with the upload box on this page and drag the OFX in like any bank download.

Most people hit this for one of two reasons. MoneyWiz's own help center says Online Banking usually downloads 30 to 90 days of history when you connect an account, sometimes more, and that the bank and provider decide. Its advice for anything older is to export it from the bank and import it manually. The second reason is the plan: MoneyWiz Standard ($29.99 a year) has cloud sync but no bank sync at all, so every transaction on Standard arrives by file or by hand.

What file formats does MoneyWiz import?

MoneyWiz imports CSV, QIF, OFX, QFX and MT940 files. Here is how the files you are probably holding line up against that list.

What you haveMoneyWiz importWhat to do with it
OFX fileYesDrag it onto the MoneyWiz window. No columns to map
QFX file (Quicken Web Connect)YesImport it the same way as OFX
QIF fileYesFine for history exported from Microsoft Money or old Quicken. No transaction IDs
CSV downloadYes, through the field mapping stepMap Date, Amount and Payee or Description at minimum
MT940 fileYesMostly a European bank format; rare in the US
PDF statement, digital or scannedNoConvert it to OFX or CSV with the upload box above, then import

OFX is the least work of the lot. Dates sit in one fixed format, amounts carry their sign, and every transaction has an ID, so there is no field mapping step and no question about whether 06/07 means June or July. That is why we recommend converting a PDF to OFX rather than CSV for anything you will import without editing first.

How do I import a PDF bank statement into MoneyWiz?

Convert the PDF to OFX, then drag the OFX onto MoneyWiz. The converter reads the transaction table on every page, scanned statements included, and writes one OFX file per statement with the posting date, signed amount, description and a stable transaction ID on each line. This routine keeps a full year clean:

  1. Upload one statement month with the box at the top of this page. Checking, savings, money market and credit card statements all work, digital or scanned.
  2. Check the extracted rows against the PDF (dates, amounts, signs), then download the result as OFX.
  3. Drag the .ofx file onto the MoneyWiz window or onto its icon. The Import Wizard opens.
  4. At Link Accounts, point the account found in the file to the right MoneyWiz account, or let MoneyWiz create it.
  5. Pick Quick import for a routine month, or Advanced import the first time so you can link payees and categories. MoneyWiz remembers those links for the next file.
  6. If MoneyWiz flags possible duplicates, decide line by line, then compare the account balance on the statement end date with the closing balance printed on the PDF.

A month per file sounds slow and is not. Each import takes a minute, and checking the balance after each one catches problems while they are small. A difference equal to one transaction means a line is missing; a difference of twice an amount means a sign came in reversed.

MoneyWiz import CSV: mapping the columns

CSV import works well in MoneyWiz, and it is the better choice when you want to add categories, tags or memos in a spreadsheet before the data lands. When you import a CSV, MoneyWiz asks how each column relates to a transaction field. It matches columns by header name on its own, so a column called Date links to Date automatically, and anything it cannot place defaults to Don't import. At minimum you need Date, Amount, and Payee or Description.

Column in the converted CSVMap it to in MoneyWizNotes
Date / Posting DateDateIf MoneyWiz asks, pick month first for a US statement
DescriptionDescription or PayeeMap one to Payee if you want MoneyWiz to learn payees
Amount (one signed column)AmountUse Amount alone; MoneyWiz will not mix it with the two columns below
Withdrawals / DebitsAmount (Expenses)For statements that print money out in its own column
Deposits / CreditsAmount (Incomes)Always paired with Amount (Expenses)
BalanceDon't importRunning balances are not transactions
Check numberCheck #Only on statements that print it

MoneyWiz accepts either one Amount column or the pair Amount (Expenses) and Amount (Incomes), never a mix. That suits bank statements well, because many US banks print withdrawals and deposits in separate columns. The converted CSV keeps the columns the way the statement prints them, so a two-column statement maps straight to the pair. If you want a single column instead, the converter's Split Debit/Credit option works the other way round (one column into two), so leave it off and add a formula in Excel.

Two details from MoneyWiz's CSV guide matter here. First, it cannot read a date that has a time stuck in the same column. Second, extra text above the header row, such as an account balance line, confuses the import. Choose Transactions only before you convert, and the CSV contains just the transaction table under one header row. Dates stay as the statement prints them; if MoneyWiz is unsure about the order, it shows you a few rows and asks, and for a US statement the answer is month first.

Which route should you use for older history?

RouteHow far backWho has itGood for
MoneyWiz Online BankingUsually 30 to 90 days on first connection, set by the bank and providerPremium only ($59.99 a year or $5.99 a month)Keeping accounts current from today
Bank website download (OFX, QFX, CSV)Whatever the bank still offersStandard and PremiumRecent months if your bank has the download
PDF statements converted to OFXEvery statement you still have, digital or paperStandard and PremiumOlder history, closed accounts, Standard plan users
PDF converted to CSVSame as aboveStandard and PremiumAdding categories or tags in a spreadsheet first

On Premium, the practical order is to import converted statements up to the end date of your most recent statement, then connect Online Banking. MoneyWiz's help center explains why: when you connect an account that already holds transactions, it downloads only transactions newer than the latest one and does not fill gaps behind it. Import first and the two routes meet cleanly. If you connect first, import the older statements afterwards and let the duplicate check handle the few days where they overlap.

How MoneyWiz handles duplicates

MoneyWiz checks every transaction in an imported file against the ones already in the account and asks you what to do when it finds a possible duplicate. Its own examples are importing the same file twice, importing a statement that runs from 25 September to 25 October after you already imported all of September, and importing two accounts that both hold the same transfer. Online Banking uses its own rule on top of that: a downloaded transaction with exactly the same amount and a date within 3 days of one you entered updates your entry instead of adding a second one. Import one statement month per file and keep the ranges from overlapping, and you will rarely see the prompt.

Moving to MoneyWiz from another app

MoneyWiz has migration guides for Microsoft Money (export a Loose QIF), Quicken Essentials for Mac (one CSV per account), Banktivity, YNAB and Moneydance, and each one asks you to note the opening balance of every account before you export. Those exports cover the years the old app held. The gap is usually the months after your last export, or accounts you never tracked. Convert those statements to OFX and import them once the old history is in. If you are still comparing apps, our pages on importing PDF statements into Banktivity and converting statements for Moneydance show the same job in those programs.

How much does it cost to convert a year of statements?

The demo converts up to 15 pages with no credit card, enough to run a statement or two through MoneyWiz end to end. A year of a typical checking account is 12 statements of 2 to 6 pages each, well inside the Starter plan at $49 a month (2,500 pages a month on the faster AI model, up to 25 pages per statement). Cancel after the month if the backlog is done. Bookkeepers catching up several clients, or anyone with long statements, will want Plus for bulk upload of up to 50 files. See pricing for current plans.

For scale, MoneyWiz Premium is $59.99 a year. One month of conversion to load several years of history costs less than a year of the app, and far less than an evening of typing a business account line by line.

MoneyWiz Import: Common Questions

No. MoneyWiz imports CSV, QIF, OFX, QFX and MT940 files, not PDF. Convert the PDF statement to OFX or CSV first, then drag the file onto the MoneyWiz window. Scanned paper statements convert the same way, because the converter reads them with OCR.

MoneyWiz imports CSV, QIF, OFX, QFX and MT940 files. You drag the file onto the MoneyWiz window or its icon, or copy its contents and use Import from clipboard in Settings. OFX needs no field mapping; CSV asks you to map at least Date, Amount and Payee or Description.

Drag the CSV onto MoneyWiz. In the field mapping step, link Date, Amount (or Amount (Expenses) plus Amount (Incomes)) and Payee or Description, pick the date format if asked, link the account, then choose Quick import or Advanced import. Keep only one header row and no text above it.

MoneyWiz Online Banking usually downloads 30 to 90 days of history when you connect an account, and the bank and provider set the limit. MoneyWiz recommends exporting older history from the bank and importing it manually. When the bank only has PDF statements, convert them to OFX and import those.

Yes. MoneyWiz checks imported transactions against the ones already in the account and asks what to do with each possible duplicate, for example when a statement overlaps a month you already imported. Import one statement month per file with no overlapping dates and the prompt rarely appears.

No. On the MoneyWiz pricing page, Standard ($29.99 a year) includes cloud sync between devices, and bank sync with over 40,000 banks is part of Premium ($59.99 a year or $5.99 a month). On Standard, statements come in as files, which is where converting PDFs helps most.

Import OFX when you want the data in as is: dates, signs and transaction IDs arrive already structured, so there is nothing to map. Use CSV when you want to add categories, tags or memos in a spreadsheet first. The same upload here gives you both files.

You can test up to 15 pages with no credit card. A year of statements for one or two accounts fits in one month of the Starter plan at $49, which includes 2,500 pages a month on the faster AI model. Cancel once the backlog is imported.
