When Sage 50 Bank Feeds stops downloading, disconnect and reconnect the account in Account Reconciliation, confirm your service plan still includes Bank Services, and update Sage 50. If the feed still leaves a gap, import the missing months as a statement file instead. Sage 50 U.S. imports OFX and QFX statements through Tasks, Account Reconciliation, Import. Your bank's OFX download covers recent months; for older months or closed accounts, convert the PDF statement to OFX with the tool above and import that.

Most pages ranking for this problem describe the UK product, which has different menus. Everything below is for Sage 50 U.S. Edition (formerly Peachtree) and comes from Sage's own U.S. help and knowledge base.

Why is my Sage 50 bank feed not working?

Almost always one of four things. The bank changed something on its side, usually a password or multi-factor setting, so the saved connection no longer authenticates. The service plan lapsed or does not include Bank Services, which Sage lists as a requirement for Bank Feeds. The software is behind on updates. Or the account was never a good fit for the feed in the first place: a closed account, a loan or card at a small institution, or months from before you connected.

The first three are fixable in a few minutes. The fourth is not, and that is where most people lose an afternoon.

Reconnect Sage 50 Bank Feeds in five minutes

  1. Log in to your bank's website directly and make sure the login works and no new security prompt is waiting.
  2. Install the latest Sage 50 update, since feed fixes ship in product updates.
  3. Open Tasks, Account Reconciliation, choose the account in Account to Reconcile, then from Bank Feeds choose Disconnect. Sage notes that transactions you already downloaded are not affected by disconnecting.
  4. From Bank Feeds choose Connect to Bank Feed, select your bank, enter your banking credentials and choose a Start date for historical transactions, then click Process.

If the feed comes back but the start date you need is earlier than your bank will release, the gap stays. Reconnecting cannot fetch history the bank does not hand over.

When reconnecting will not fill the gap

You still have the statements. Sage 50 can import a statement file for any month and use it to reconcile, whether the feed ever covered that month or not. The question is only where the file comes from.

Can you import a PDF bank statement into Sage 50?

No. Sage 50 U.S. imports bank statements in OFX or QFX format only, and Sage's knowledge base says a PDF has to go through third-party conversion first. Sage also says it does not troubleshoot those conversions, so it is worth choosing a converter that writes a plain, standard OFX file. Ours writes the OFX 1.02 layout that banks have published for years, with a unique transaction ID on every line, and it reads scanned statements with OCR.

How to import the statement in Sage 50 Account Reconciliation

  1. Upload the PDF statement in the converter at the top of this page, check the rows against the printed totals, and download OFX. If your bank still offers an OFX or QFX download for that month, you can use that file instead.
  2. In Sage 50, select Tasks, Account Reconciliation.
  3. Select the Account to Reconcile and enter the correct Statement Date.
  4. Click Import, choose Manually select a statement, click Browse, pick the file and click Open.
  5. Click Import. Sage shows a summary of the statement, including debits, credits, interest and service charges, and you match the bank records to your Sage 50 transactions, manually where needed.

Sage asks you to import one month at a time. Keep to that on a catch-up job: import a month, reconcile it, then import the next. If a statement is later corrected and you import it again, Sage warns it can create duplicate bank records, so check the account for duplicates after any re-import.

What a statement import does and does not do in Sage 50

This is the part that surprises people. Sage's knowledge base says importing bank statements will not generate transactions in Sage. The import gives Account Reconciliation the bank's side of the month, so matched items clear and unmatched ones stand out. It does not write the checks, deposits or fees into your books.

That makes the fallback a good fit for the common case, where your team recorded the transactions and only the feed broke. If the books are behind as well, record the missing items first (bank fees and interest are the usual ones), then import and reconcile. For a long list of missing entries, the CSV export from the same converter is easier to work from than the PDF.

Why will my OFX file not import into Sage 50?

Sage's own answer is that the file was generated without proper formatting, and the most common culprit is an unrecognized character used as a line break. Sage's fix is to open the file in WordPad and save it, which rewrites the line breaks, or to remove the stray characters in Notepad. Two other common causes: the file is actually CSV or Excel renamed to .ofx, which Sage will never read, and the statement date entered in Account Reconciliation does not match the month in the file.

What the fallback costs

OFXStatement Starter is $49 a month, or $24.50 a month billed yearly ($294), for 2,500 pages from a shared monthly pool. A full year of 4 page statements for three accounts is 144 pages, so most feed gaps are one month of Starter. You can test 15 pages first with no credit card. If you are comparing converters, our PDF to OFX converter comparison prices four tools on the same jobs.

For bank accounts that break every month, not just once, it is worth asking whether reconciliation should live in a tool that watches the feeds for you. An automated account reconciliation tool can take that off the month end list, and statement imports then only cover the accounts no feed will ever reach.

Sage 50 bank feed questions

Does Sage 50 have bank feeds?

Yes. Sage 50 U.S. has Bank Feeds in Account Reconciliation for version 2018.1 and later, and it requires a service plan that includes Bank Services. Once connected, transactions download from your bank into Sage 50, starting from the start date you choose when you connect.

Can you import bank statements into Sage 50?

Yes, in OFX or QFX format through Tasks, Account Reconciliation, Import, one month at a time. The import is for reconciliation: it does not create transactions. Sage's knowledge base says the feature is not available in Sage 50 Pro Accounting.

Can I import a CSV bank statement into Sage 50?

Not into the Account Reconciliation statement import, which reads OFX and QFX. Sage community answers point U.S. users with a CSV download toward the bank's OFX export instead. If the bank only gives you CSV or PDF, convert the PDF to OFX.

Will disconnecting Bank Feeds delete my downloaded transactions?

No. Sage's help says transactions you downloaded through Sage Bank Feeds are not affected by disconnecting, so a disconnect and reconnect is a safe first step.
